Sao Paulo blackout leaves 1.4M without power, hundreds of flights cancelled
1+ hour, 54+ min ago (265+ words) SAO PAULO " More than 1.4 million Sao Paulo residents had no electricity on Thursday after strong winds caused several trees to collapse onto the Brazilian metropolis" grid the day before. Local authorities said there were no injuries, but almost 400 flights were cancelled. Utility Enel has provided no deadline for services to return. One of its directors, Marcelo Puertas, told journalists the Italian company has 1,300 people working to solve the issue since winds of about 100 kilometres per hour started hitting Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo city hall said 231 trees have fallen due to what it calls effects of an extratropical cyclone formed in the south of Brazil. Aviation authorities say most of the cancelled flights were at the local Congonhas airport, but added that Guarulhos International Airport, outside the city, was also affected. Mayor Ricardo Nunes, whose administration is responsible for trimming the…...
This AI model ‘studied’ physics — and learnt to forecast extreme weather
15+ hour, 45+ min ago (513+ words) Alexandra Witze writes for Nature from Boulder, Colorado. In April last year, more rain fell in Dubai in a single day than would normally be expected to fall in an entire year.Credit: Giuseppe Cacace/AFP via Getty Artificial-intelligence tools have transformed weather forecasting, thanks to their ability to learn past patterns from observations and predict how future patterns might unfold. But until now, models have sometimes struggled to forecast extreme weather events that they've never seen before, but that are happening more frequently as the planet warms. It's like trying to "forecast the future with yesterday's climate, as Jacob Landsberg, a data scientist at Boston University in Massachusetts, puts it. One new approach that's showing success combines an artificial-intelligence (AI) model with a conventional climate model, plus mathematical tools that describe rare events, to forecast weather extremes more effectively....

BOM tinkers with website after massive backlash
1+ day, 11+ hour ago (302+ words) The Bureau of Meteorology has updated its rain radar and weather map in a bid to make it easier for users to navigate after backlash over its $96.5 million new website spend. The bureau's website is one of the most visited in Australia. But after spending almost $100 million on upgrading it, BOM faced a backlash from users who found it was no longer user-friendly, nor did it properly indicate the severity of local storms. BOM announced on Wednesday it had refined its warnings, rain radar and weather map to address some of the criticism. Bureau of Meteorology chief executive Stuart Minchin said some of the updates to the website were planned while others were a direct response to complaints. "We've heard a significant amount of feedback about the new rain radar and weather map," he said. "In response to that feedback,…...
Sri Lanka ‘open for business’ following floods
1+ day, 21+ hour ago (717+ words) Sri Lanka's tourism industry says the destination is returning to normal and open to travellers following the country's worst floods in decades. Storm systems bring heavy rain to the Pacific Northwest and a wintry mix to the Upper Midwest
1+ day, 22+ hour ago (509+ words) The first of a series of powerful storms hit the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday, dumping heavy rain, swelling rivers and prompting high water rescues, authorities said. Fire crews rescued two people who were trapped by floodwaters at a campsite in the Gold Bar area of Snohomish County north of Seattle on Monday night, KOMO-TV reported. Crews used drones and water rescue crafts to reach them and get them to safety, officials said. The Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management warned Tuesday morning that rivers in the county remained under flood warning with the Skykomish River hitting major flood status at Gold Bar overnight. Gold Bar police said in a social media post Monday evening that deputies were going door-to-door in the Moonlight Drive neighborhood to warn residents of imminent flooding. The Washington State Department of Transportation closed eastbound Interstate 90 at…...
Are the sun's UV rays stronger on cloudy days?
2+ day, 10+ hour ago (293+ words) So which is it? Two types of UV rays originate from the sun and penetrate Earth's atmosphere: UV-A and UV-B. UV-A rays cause the most skin aging and wrinkles while UV-B rays cause sunburns and contribute the most to skin cancer. For the most part, typical cloud cover can dampen UV rays. However, this dampening is not always as significant as people might think. According to "Scattered and Filtered Solar UV Measurements," a book about the UV environment and the effects human UV exposure, "normal UV precautions" (Page 21) should be maintained even on cloudy days to prevent health hazards." Clouds are constantly morphing and can form in a variety of shapes and sizes, making it difficult to know for sure how much UV is getting through. According to the U.S. Envrionmenal Protection Agency (EPA), broken clouds absorb only about 27% of UV…...
